El DeBarge, known for hits like “Rhythm of the Night,” was arrested following an encounter with law enforcement at a gas station.
According to TMZ, the arrest took place at around 3:40 AM on Sunday, January 8, after police noticed that his vehicle had expired tags while he was at a gas station.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers spotted an expandable metal baton in plain view inside El DeBarge’s car.
Since the baton is considered an illegal weapon, the police conducted a further search of the vehicle, during which they found pepper spray and suspected narcotics.
El DeBarge, who is also accused of not having a valid driver’s license, was subsequently taken into custody and booked on several charges, including possession of a leaded cane or baton, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
It is suspected that the discovered drug in the car is heroin. El DeBarge has posted a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in March.
